Truth of the Week 15: To Everything a Season

by Catherine King and Jenny Cioto

Ecclesiastes 3:1 – To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven. NKJV

Thank goodness! If some of life’s terrible things lasted forever, we would be in such sad shape! It is unfortunate our happy times can’t last forever on this side – but we have heaven to look forward to!

The verses that follow (2-8) list 14 pairs of opposites explaining how there is a time for everything on earth beautifully fitting into God’s purpose. Notice that word purpose….

So everything has a purpose. Your pain, your grief, your rest, your joy, your heartbreak, your gain, and so on.

Looking back on my extremely hard seasons in life, I really wish I had remembered this verse. I wish I had held onto it and reminded myself I wouldn’t be stuck in my season forever. I sure lost some hope in different times that things would get better before I died. I don’t want you lost in your season without hope.

I know what a painfully difficult 10 years looks like. That was a hard season – and it ended. Not that there won’t be other seasons in the future, but I didn’t get stuck in that extremely hard space. And now I see so much of the why. I had some serious heart and faith changing that needed to happen.

Oh there are still questions about why things had to happen the way they did, but I know the character of God is good and He works all things for the good of those who love Him. Some things just won’t be revealed to us on this side.

There’s a lot of comfort in the fact that there’s a purpose. Friend – sister- there is a purpose to your pain and it will in fact end. Maybe not as fast as you’d like, but it will. Hold on to your hope.

Heaven will be incredible. Anything we can think about it will even be blown out of the water when we experience it. I love to entertain the idea that God will show us beautifully written stories about real life situations we have been in and how they tied together for unthinkable goodness. Maybe it will be like a movie theater situation where we eat 0 calorie foods that taste amazing and watch human experiences in God-D.

Leave this post today with some renewed truth that your season is just that – a set amount of non-continuous time – and it has a purpose. Hold on. Trust Him.
