Truth of the Week 34: Taking Care of Others Show Notes
Welcome to Pursuing true North’s Truth of the Week Series! I am Catherine King and I’m Jenny Cioto!
This week’s Truth of the Week – James 1:27 – Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. ESV
~ I love how this verse expands on an Old Testament verse from Isaiah chapter 17 verse 1 – “Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow.”
~ Our verse is also very two pronged. Religion that is pure is to act on behalf of others and keep ourselves unstained from the world.
~ Widows and orphans can be among some of the most vulnerable members of society. Using that action we spoke last week about – we are to act on behalf of others, especially those that can’t do for themselves or need some extra help. They for sure should be on our radar for service.
~ I like how the Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary puts it, “Finally, and lest obedience to God’s word seem entirely a matter of external behavior, James stresses the need for an inner attitude and value system distinct from that of the world in which we live. (1530)”
~When we look like Jesus on the inside we won’t look like the world. That’s what should mark our religion.
~ Of course, the world does some wonderful and noble work. But our internal work should be that which reflects our Creator, not just our outside works
