Welcome to Pursuing true North’s Truth of the Week Series! I am Catherine King and I’m Jenny Cioto!
This week’s Truth of the Week – Matthew 11: 28-29 – Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
~ Have you gone to Him? Jesus, that is. He’s the Way to the Father. The Only Way – His words (John 14:6).
~ Coming to Jesus is an act of our will – a step of obedience to His call on our lives. He is calling us to Him. We have to respond and come
~ lowly in heart? I discovered in all my commentary reading that it’s referring to Christ’s compassion and understanding of how we as humans don’t want or need more overbearing, demanding, harsh and oppressive obligations and He is offering us the opposite of that.
~ The current climate of religion at the time was established by the Pharisees and they were the opposite of lowly in heart. Jesus knew we needed gentleness and the kindness from Him to feel safe with Him. Knowing He doesn’t have heavy demands of us is a major selling point.
~How do you respond to harsh people?
~ Yokes are those harnesses you put on working animals to direct and steer them in what work they are to be doing. In the same sense following our Jesus has directions and guidelines to help us stay on the right paths.
~ His burden is light. Sure, He has guidelines for us to live by that I do know some find strict, but honestly if you look at what He asks of us it isn’t overbearing and it makes sense.
Challenge: Have you come to Jesus and learned from Him? That’s how to enter into real rest!
